Does anyone have experience volunteering with Cross Cultural Solutions?

  • I'm considering volunteering with CCS next summer in Dharamsala, India. However, it's going to cost me around $5,000. And although the cost adds up correctly (airfare, food, housing, cultural activities), I want to hear from those who have worked with CCS to make sure it's an excellent experience. Thanks so much!

Hi, I volunteered with CCS in 5 countries! I went to Morocco, Peru, Ghana, Costa Rica and South Africa. I hope this pretty much answers half of your question, as I had such a wonderful experience with CCS. I found that each country and program is different, but in their own way - but I learned so much abroad. I am sure you know, but aside from volunteering, you have lessons after volunteering, you can either go on tours with your volunteers, you are very much in the country as much as possible. One of the best things about CCS is even though you are in another country and learning a different way of life, CCS does its very best to make you feel very comfortable, and adheres to your needs when feeling a bit homesick or having a bad case of culture clash. However, this doesn't happen often to those who are willing to volunteer and "open their horizons" but it does happen, especially the first few days you are there. You will immediately feel like part of the family too, which is wonderful. CCS is its own entity when it comes to their programs because you can see the consistency with the in country staff and the staff who helps you get ready. I've worked with several staff who got me ready to go abroad and not one question went unanswered, and it is the same for every country I have volunteered in. The in-country staff in EVERY country I have volunteered with in CCS has been more than incredible. I haven't been to Dharamsala, India, but I know quite a few who have LOVED it. Good luck!

I've researched about 60 different volunteer abroad organizations and used 2 different ones myself. What I can tell you is that the fees for CCS and big organizations like it are exorbitant. India just does not cost that much money. Most of your fees are going back into marketing expenses for these huge organizations. Yes they will make you feel comfortable but there are about 40 other companies who will offer you the same service for a cheaper price. $3,200 for 3 weeks in India is a huge huge rip off. I recommend going through a smaller organization, you will get more personal service, and your fees are not supporting marketing materials but actual locals. One great organization to use is Leave UR Mark: http://www.leaveurmark.com Good luck, I don't mean to discourage you but just so you get an idea that India really is not that expensive.
