What is a good "gap" year program?

What organisations provide food and board without it beeing an expensive Gap year program?

  • Whit out boring you with my problems, my life in the UK has ended. I have nobody left here, no life no future. I was wondering if there are volunteer jobs abroad where I could apply to volunteer, in return for food and board. I'm not overly skilled but I don't want to end up picking apples, painting and because of my arthritis I can't do heavy manual work. Plus a lot of those Gap year volunteer programs 'mummy and daddy will pay for me to stroke dolphins' just can't afford them and I understand their expensive to pay of the arrangements. But, please are there similar organizations which won't cost above £200, as I also have to consider the flight. I'm desperate to leave, I'm not into battling people so the military is everything I'm opposed from, I have tried just applying for work but it's been a nightmare and a lot want you to be sponsored by another agency to qualify for a visa. I want out of the UK as I just don't have anything and would like to explore the world out there. Would like to help rescue endangered animals but you need a degree like in zoology or a year training in veterinary right? I know this is unrealistic but I would love to help animals or teach surf on a beach or help buddist monks in a temple , I know stupid!

  • Answer:

Have you heard of WOOFing? You basically volunteer on a farm in exchange for room/board. It's all about learning about the local land and sustainable communities. Working with animals is common. You can search for a farm anywhere in the world to host you. Check it out: wwoof.org If you're looking for a general directory of volunteer abroad opportunities, I'd try searching Go-volunteerabroad.com. Goodluck!

Hey there....so basically you want a Gap Year experience but you can't pay the Gap Year prices. That's totally understandable. However, you really wont find the kind of experience you are looking for because Gap Year agencies have actually set up these programs. Without these agencies you wont be able to do what you want to do. No one in a developing country will provide you food and board for doing volunteer work because they really can't afford it. They need funding and can't even pay their own staff and office rents let alone untrained international volunteers. I don't mean to discourage you at all. I feel your frustration and I truly feel that you will get to fulfill your dreams of going abroad. I totally understand the UK seems hopeless right now but I would suggest to take it one step at a time. Get a low paying/entry level position in the UK somewhere and then work day and night in order to fund your work/volunteer/intern year abroad. It's not impossible...you'll do it...just focus on making some money, saving up, and then going abroad rather than going abroad completely broke. If you have no money while you're abroad, chances are if you are in a very bad situation medically or otherwise, you will not be able to pull yourself out. So go with comfortable amounts of money. For a year abroad in another country (take India for example), you will need around $12,000 (U.S.) for 12 months for food, housing, transportation, and going out expenses. If you can only save up to half of that, just spend 6 months abroad and then more opportunities will pop out to you while you're there. Dont go through a very expensive UK based Gap Year Program. There are programs that provide similar services but are cheaper in nature. You can check out Leave UR Mark for one. Anyways keep it as a goal in mind to be achieved in say 1.5 years worth of time. I'm sure you'll do it! You can check out the website here: http://www.leaveurmark.com Good luck!
