How do I send letters to Sri Lanka from india?

I have a pen friend in Sri Lanka. I will be sending her my first letter. I have no idea what all choices India Post offers for sending letters and small packages out of the country. I looked into the official website but not sure if I it's necessary to go to the Post office to post the letter or I can post the letter in regular post boxes. What is AirMail, by the way? Can somebody give me the easy steps to send her at least a letter?

Answer:
Simply go to a post office and tell them you want to mail a letter to Sri Lanka. They will give you stamps ( it's the cost for the mailing process) so buy them and paste them. Then put in to the post box. Postal service will do the rest.
