Where is a good place to go on vacation?

I want to take a vacation by myself. Where is a good place to go, where I could have fun on my own?

  • I'm 19 years old, and want like to take a vacation at the end of the summer to relax before I go back to college. No one is able to go with me, so I would need to go alone. I don't have a passport, so it needs to be in the US. Any ideas?

  • Answer:

How about Washington, DC? If you like museums and monuments, DC would be a great place to go by yourself. You can spend as much (or as little) time as you want at any of the attractions. DC is easy to get around, and almost all of the tourist sites are within walking distance of one another.

San Diego is a great vacation spot. At 19, you won't be able to take advantage of the bars and nightclubs, but there is plenty of shopping, beach lounging, hiking, and dining to be done here. You can rent a car and take a day trip up to Los Angeles... it is only two hours north of San Diego. San Diego is more affordable, less crowded, and safer than LA, which is why I recommend you stay in SD over LA. Coronado Island, Balboa Park, Gaslamp, and Torrey Pines are all "must see" and my personal recommendations for pigging out are brunch at the Four Seasons Aviara (Carlsbad) and high tea at Cafe Chloe in the East Village. Good luck! :)

I really had fun in Vegas when I went by myself. At the very least you can check out all the hotels and shows they have...and the fashion mall.

It kind of depends on what you like to do, where you are coming from, and what kind of transportation you are using. If you like beaches, go to Florida or Alabama...definitely not Mississippi's beaches because they are nasty due to Katrina. See, when I want to have a relaxing time alone, I like to go to the Coast, sit on the beach, and read good books. I'm a teacher, so I rarely get to read books for my own enjoyment. You could tan while on the beach. Maybe you'd like seeing Hot Springs, AR. My whole family went to Hot Springs, and I did a lot of site-seeing on my own. It was fabulous!

Seattle is nice, but I was there with other people. There are a lot of natural attractions there if you're into that: The San Juan Islands; Olympic Peninsula National Park; hikes in the Cascades. Then there's coffee. Chicago... All of the business contacts I have, that travel around the country, say they like their trips to Chicago the best. Check out the museums (Natural History; Science and Industry; Modern Art; Art Institute and more). There's the Aquarium and the Planetarium. Grant Park and Millennium Park (complete with The Bean). Comedy clubs (most might be 21 or over) and all kinds of other shows, too. The Sears Tower and the John Hancock (which is close shopping on the Magnificent Mile). North Ave beach. And a game at Wrigley (bleachers, preferably), even if you don't like the Cubs or baseball, it's a great experience. There are unlimited ride week long and weekend passes available for the CTA (the El and buses).

I don't know if you prefer the outdoors, cultural amenities, solitude or company. I think San Franscisco is a pretty good place to travel solo. It has good public transportation so you don't have to worry about a car, and I've found some pretty good hostels/boutique hotels downtown, depending on your budget. It has arts and wonderful outdoor places if you like to hobnob, but also a lot of cafes and bookstores if you want to be alone. You can catch a ferry ride or sign up for a bus tour to a National Park if you want to get away from the city, too. Chinatown is a great place to get a lot of cheap food and cheap souvenirs if you're into that. I've only been there as a visitor, but it was a wonderful place to walk and think, or do the tourist trap things if I felt like it, and a lot of it is pretty safe if you keep reasonable hours. It is a big city, so the people move at a brisk pace, but the locals are helpful when I ask for directions. Because the weather is relatively mild, I don't have to worry much about blizzards or hurricanes to affect my stay.
