How much does it cost to climb Mount. Kilimanjaro?

Can I climb Mount Kilimanjaro without a guide?

  • I really want to climb the mountain however I am an office junior and its going to cost me in the excess of £2,000.00 from the UK to do if I go with a guide. Is there a way I can do it without a guide, all I wanted to do was fly there, get a coach or rent a car to Kilimanjaro and then start my climb. I can read maps and I consider myself very fit and healthy so that side of things should be ok, I also don’t mind sleeping in a tent all the way up and eating ration packs that I will bring with me. My understanding is you must have a guide but I simply cannot afford this. is this right and if so is there anyway around it Thanks for any help!!

  • Answer:

Roughly a dozen people die on Kilimanjaro every year so you would be a fool to attempt a climb here without a guide. Keep in mind that your level of fitness bears no relation to your susceptibility to mountain sickness. If you can run 5 miles in 45 minutes, you are probably fit enough to make the climb, but you still need to find out how your body handles the thin air of extreme altitude. Climb to 10,000 feet at least once during your training. Ask your doctor what the symptoms of AMS are and what to do if it strikes you or a climbing companion.

If you are going for first time then its better have a guide with you

I was reading up on Kilimanjaro as a possible for the future and what became clear was how severely the difficulty and danger of climbing is being underestimated. The authorities in Tanzania put some of the blame for this on the growth in recent years of charity/sponsorship type climbing excursions which lead people to think it's something of a walk in the park, which it most definitely isn't. You can climb the mountain without a guide. I know unless I was very experienced with climbing mountains of that proportion I wouldn't. Kilimanjaro is nearly 6000m/20,000ft high, well into the zone where you could be affected by acute mountain sickness, which in severe cases can be fatal, you want someone watching over you in that kind of environment. Anyone can be affected by AMS, our level of physical fitness has no bearing on it. I can't say for certain but I'd imagine once you'd fully costed it out the difference between the full round trip journey for a solo and guided climb there wouldn't be that much difference and of course you have the full back up, support, knowledge and greater peace of mind with a guided expedition.
