Answer:
Thank you for a great question! To start with, agro-tourism is an outgrowth of ecotourism, and allows visitors to experience agricultural life first-hand (see link below for the ecotour directory site.) There is increasing interest in how we manage our resources and sustain ourselves globally, and trends in tourism reflect larger cultural trends in general: social responsibility/altruism, aging travellers seeking a wider range of experiences and "active" travel, and interest in how food/beverage&wine is developed both from a health and culinary standpoint. While there will always be demand for traditional sightseeing trips, in recent years there has been an increase in vacations that allow participants to make a difference or give back to the global community. People can volunteer on archaeological digs, help rebuild homes, clean/repair areas devastated by natural disaster, etc. India can benefit from agro-tourism, indeed there has already been significant inroads in eco-tourism, even among its locals. For example, the success of Snow leopard adventures in northern India. The owner is devoted to developing Indian ecotourism, and offers corporate training programs in which some of the best and brightest of India's finance and tech industry workers become aware and enthusiastic about preserving India's natural resources. The camp also receives many international visitors, who then become converts (myself included!.) I think similar programs are springing up specific to agricultural interests--not just in India, but other regions where agriculture primarily takes the form of family farms, especially with the popularity in natural foods, food and health care products, using exotic spices and flavorings, and nutriceuticals. Since governments in such areas tend to place more resources behind developing technology or energy production (and less on local food production), agro-tourism and the attention it brings would help subsidise the local farming industry. Below is a link to the development of agro- and ecotourism in other parts of the world, such as the southern Caucasus and Cyprus. You've certainly made me rethink how I should spend my summer vacation!
