What is it like to travel the world and see many people/places?
-
For anyone who has done plenty of travelling, and when I say travelling I don't mean holidaying. I mean really getting to know the world behind the curtains. The good and bad of the places you visit. The rich, the poverty stricken, and the crime ridden places of the world. From Cities, Towns, and Villages. The different people you've met. The tranquil natural beauty of the landscapes. Mountains, Forests, Artic Snow, Deserts, Oceans ect. I would love to travel the globe. I want to learn about other cultures, trek natures wonders, and see wildlife outside the zoo's. I also want to see the 'dark' side of the world. I like to envision the world for what it really is. Not what countries and people 'want' me to see. To get a sense of what the world is really about and lift the curtains over my eyes. Anyhow I don't think I will ever fulfil my thoughts, but for anyone that has - What is it like? Where have you travelled to and what is the location and people like? - and most important of all, does the experiences empower or fulfil you at all?

Answer:
I have done quite a bit of traveling. I live in a foreign country, and that alone really opens your eyes to the rest of the world beyond your home country. As of now, I have visited 17 countries and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I have seen the exorbitantly rich cities of the Arabian Gulf, and I have also seen the starving villages of Sri Lanka. I have hiked through deserts, jungles, thick forests and the freezing Swiss Alps. I have skiied down sandy slopes in Dubai. I have climbed through the ancient pyramids of Giza. Traveling is really a gift and it really "awakens" you. To really experience a place, you have to visit there. You can't get an idea of what a place is like off of google earth. The experiences I have had empower me to see more of the world, so that I can better understand the people I share earth with. As an American, I get so many narrow minded opinions thrown at me. People suspect I'm a terrorist if I live in the Middle East and ask me if I have to ride a camel. These are the type of people I wish I could take out and show them what the world is really like, because they are just seeing what CNN is showing them. It honestly makes me depressed to know that before I moved, I was friends with such arrogant people. I don't think I will be fulfilled until I am an old old man who has seen every country. Its amazing what a little traveling, even "holidaying" as you put it, can really open your eyes. You don't have to travel to the middle of nowhere to experience a place just the same as if you mingled with locals in a city. But yes, for some places a visit to a dirt poor village may be just what you need to realize there are bigger issues than who drives what car.

I can't answer all the questions you ask but oooh how I love the passionate way in which you have translated all your thoughts into this question. I've travelled a little and spent time with people, learned of different cultures, seen poverty and riches, witnessed selflessness and selfishness. All in all my tiny adventures have left me with a depth of understanding about human nature. The world over, most people just want to live in peace, and have access to fundamental human rights. Experiencing all the things you talk about is a life time journey and one which can not be achieved in a few short years. There are people who devote their lives to reach such an attainment. If you are really serious about travelling for the purposes of learning you could sign up to doing voluntary service overseas. There are many organisations such the Red Cross, UNICEF, Medicine Sans Frontier (MSF), Christian Aid, Shelter Box,Aqua Box, who recruit volunteers in some of the world's most desolate places. I hope I've helped a little towards the vision you have for yourself. Good luck, and never stop dreaming, it only takes one dreamer to make dreams come true for many.
