Best route to South Lake Tahoe?

  • Hi - This Friday i'm going to be going to South Lake Tahoe from San Francisco - Leaving around 3pm so i'll be hitting rush hour around Sacromento - what is the best way to get to South Lake? I was thinking 80 to 50 however 50 goes straight through Sac' is this really bad or not? Any advice, thanks!

    I think the best way is on 50, too. But check out the SigAlert.com website before you take off. It will show you all the 'bad' places to avoid on the highways. Sometimes I bypass Sac using some of the roads through farms/ranches like Grantline off of 99 going all the way to the east side of Sac. I also like taking Twin Cities from Hwy 5 to 99. Keeps me from going through traffic in Lodi or Sacramento. I prefer to stay south of Sacramento and avoid the traffic.

Yes, 80 to 50 is your best route. You're going to hit traffic whatever route you take. If you leave a few hours earlier you could avoid some congestion, especially in the bay area.

no matter which way, its bad. traffic is very congested between the city and sac, especially on a friday. you can take 4 to 99 or 5 north but that is long and maybe more congested.
