What are student loans in america like?

• i live in england and i know what student loans are like here, however i want to spent my uni years in america. i cant afford it and i will have to take a student loan. also what are general requirments to get in to a uni in america such as nyu

  You need to be realistic about what you can afford before taking out the loan. I took out student loans in the US, but I limited myself to State schools where I had in-State status so costs were lower- even though i was accepted at very expensive private universities. I also calculated my approximate future income based on my major. All my loans were paid off within 10 years. Don't take out a loan to go to NYU if your aspiration is to be a social worker or other careers where the pay is traditionally low. You will be in debt the rest of your life. State universities will be cheaper even for out-of-Staters (which you would be classified as) than most private schools. I am thankful every day for the prudent financial decisions my 17 year old self made, especially when I see so many friends still with crippling student loans.
