How do you do the Boardwalk on a snowboard?

Ocean City, MD--is the boardwalk really noisy at night?

  • I'm looking to find a hotel on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD this August. Is it a noisy boardwalk at night, like Old Orchard Beach in Maine? Would I be better off staying off of the boardwalk, or is the noise level tolerable? And, regardless of the noise level, can anyone recommend a hotel on the boardwalk that reasonably priced?

  • Answer:

Hehehe-- like you wouldn't believe. Old Orchard Beach, as I recall, is a veritable ghost town at its busiest compared to OC MD. If you're like me and hate noise, do NOT stay on the boardwalk in season. If you must however, stay as far NORTH as you can. It's much quieter up there-- especially on some of the higher floors like in the Quality Inn. Try Best Western Flagship on 26th street. It's about as quiet as it gets. Personally, my wife and I will not go to OC during season anymore. It's WAY to crowded and noisy now. Expect to sit on Costal Highway (the main strip through town) an hour or more to get less than 10 miles from the north end to the south end in August. Nothing is reasonably priced anymore in OC. A lot of Marylanders I know and grew up with who have always gone there won't now. They often say you can FLY to the Caribbean and stay for a week CHEAPER than a week in OC. I used to think it was an exaggeration but I'm fairly sure it's not now. ******EDIT******** As mentioned above-- "Carousel and the Clarion Fountainbleu" ARE great ones. They're FAR from the boardwalk and the heart of the crowd. We stay at them too, but prepare for BIG $$$$$$$. *******EDIT************ If it's any help, I should point out that OC becomes the state's second most-populated city during the summer-- second only to Baltimore. http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=386 That's saying a mouthful considering the entire island is only about a mile wide by 10 miles long. It's incredibly packed in the summer. If you're thinking of Old Orchard Beach, you're in for a shocker. *******EDIT************* If noise is an issue, I strongly advise against the advice above to stay below 20th street! You can walk to everything from anywhere! The boardwalk is only 3 1/2 miles long-- certainly not worth trying to sleep with the crowd outside to save a couple block's walk. Most people like walking the whole boardwalk anyway. My advice-- don't stay anywhere near the boards. Much nicer far north in all regards. More expensive but quieter and more family oriented.

The boardwalk is kind of noisy up until around 12 or 1 a.m. and then really quiets down. We always stay on the boardwalk, just to get the sound of the ocean and the people and to sit on the balcony and people watch. The noise is not that bad and you can always shut your door and not hear it at all. The Paradise Plaza Inn is good, altho they have a very small pool, if that is important to you. Our kids like to swim in pools rather than the ocean, so it is important to us. The Tidelands Caribbean Hotel is where we stayed last time, and we liked it a lot. They have 2 pools, one has a bar and restaurant right there and you get poolside service. Either is good, I think. Anyway, definitely stay on the boardwalk below 20th street or so. That way you can walk to everything. Enjoy!

Ocean City has changed a lot. It has gotten a lot grungier with a lot of younger people and unfortunately, yes, noise. Although I have never stayed on the boardwalk, I'm pretty sure it would be noisy. Ocean City is a very busy and crowded place, and with the amusement park open until midnight, I would expect it to be pretty noisy. If you are going to stay on the boardwalk (you obviously can't beat that location), I would advise staying as far away from the amusement park as possible. For example, the new Hilton is very nice and you can walk to the boardwalk from it, but it is located at the very end of the boardwalk. Other hotels I recommend are the Carousel and the Clarion Fountainbleu.
