Which is the best place to live in California?

(cali people) Wheres the best place to live in Northern California for me?

  • hey guys i need some advice, specifically from people who are from northern california who can point me in the right direction to a place that might be right for me. a little advice never hurts. so im gonna get out of the army soon and go back to college and get my degree. i've been considering the prospects of moving to different places in the country and i keep coming to this idea of moving to northern california. however, i'm not sure which city would be right for me because california is a pretty big state. i don't know exactly how to explain everything i'm looking for so i'll just write down the the things that narrow my search down. hopefully this will help. - i'm looking for a mid-sized city (pop. around 500,000) mainly for better job prospects. however, i would much rather live somewhere more peaceful and secluded. perhaps on the outskirts of a city like this. I know job prospects aren't favorable right now but i'm also an optimist when it comes to this. a lower unemployment rate (compared to other CA cities) is a plus. - i want to attend a regionally accredited four year public college (nothing prestigious or highly selective). - a city with lower crime rate is a huge plus. - i'm naturally an outdoors person so i love hiking, fishing, camping and i also love exercising too. places that retain natural beauty are more appealing to me as opposed to concrete jungles :( also... I LOVE THE OCEAN! i would be a beach bum if i could. but for now i just want to live close to somewhere where i could have a nice, peaceful spot to visit the ocean (if there is such a thing? idk). - affordability. i know this seems like a lofty idea. perhaps i should use the terms "less expensive cost of living". because i plan to move by myself and support myself. my 9/11 g.i. bill will help a lot for the first 3 years and i plan to graduate with my bachelors degree definitely within 3 years because i have prior college credits but after that I'm thinking I might choose to go for my masters degree for better job prospects. - cities with vibrant eco-friendly cultures and programs are a plus. okay, so these are pretty much my main factors for which i'm deciding where exactly would be the best place for me to move to. still considering :) any helpful advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Okay, so the first recommendation that comes to mind, for me at least, in Humboldt County. Specifically Arcata, if you're planning on going to college. It is a fairly small town. 15,000 at most. There are many, many parks where you can take amazing hikes. Breath taking views. It is also home to the largest tree in the world. There are an enormous amounts of redwoods, all of which are beautiful. From my house, in Humboldt, I can walk to the ocean. Housing is fairly cheap. I don't know anyone who is unable to find a job. But...the town is a notorious pot town. Everyone smokes it. Everyone knows someone who grows it. It's just life.

This is a public service announcement. Please do not change the station... Contrary to the popular belief of rappers, tourists, and 7th grade girls, California is not called Cali. Cali is a drug infested city in the country of Columbia located in South America, someplace that you would not want to live. California is a state in the United States of America. It's a good place to live and is has nothing associated with the city in Columbia. Please refer to the state as California, Cal, NorCal, or SoCal. Thank you for not turning the channel, back to our regularly scheduled programming. A city of 500,000 people is pretty big city. Metro areas in California are typically made up of a bunch of smaller areas. Here is a list of all the regional campuses in California: http://www.calstate.edu/search_find/campus.shtml Good options for you maybe: - Sonoma State University = 45 minutes from the coast. Very nice area with lots of nature around. Can probably find reasonable housing costs - Cal State Monterey Bay = right on the Monterey Bay. It's a smaller community less than 1.5 hours from San Jose. Probably one of the cheapest places to live in California that is on the water. - California Maritime Academy = Vallejo where it is located is not the best location or the worst location. It is part of the San Franciso Bay area and very urban (east bay). But you are close to the wine country and other beautiful places. Housing is probably the most expensive out of the options provided.
