What does it mean to be an American?

What does "All-American City" or "All-American Town" mean?

  • I'm Canadian but travel quite a bit through the US. I encounter signs when I enter certain cities/towns that read "All-American City" or "All-American Town". Sometimes high school sports teams will be refered to as "All-American". What does this mean? How does a city get this designation? Can you give me an example of an "All-American" town or city and the differences between the other towns? Thanks :)

  • Answer:

It's "All-America (not American) City", and it's an award designation given by the National Civic League to ten cities in the U.S. annually based on specific criteria. See their website at http://www.ncl.org/aac/about.html

That's kind of hard to answer, but I'll try... the term "All-American" is used to describe anything that exemplifies the American ideal. So an All-American city would probably be a mid-sized, kind of sleepy city with a Town Hall, and flower beds up and down Main Street. Everyone would know everyone else and look out for each other, and no one would have to lock their doors. (So basically, we want our cities to be more Canadian. HAHAHA) It's also a kind of generic term we use to describe any small midwestern city. The anti-"All-American" town is probably the normal American city... lol. An All-American sportsman is usually the one of the best at the high school or college level. Some corporations sponsor All-American camps every year, and you must be invited in order to attend. Hope that helps.
