Curious about your choice of Wake Forest. Wake Forest is a small (population is about 30,000), very conservative and mostly white town that is home to the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Very fast growing town that is really a suburb of Raleigh and also very close to Durham. I would expect that you would find the people of Wake Forest would be very friendly and would try to help you to get a new start. I drive through there all the time on my way to my in-laws house in Wilson and I really like it. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=12&ved=0CIwBEBYwCw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wakeforestchamber.org%2F&ei=zVgoT_6SM_C62gWY76y8Ag&usg=AFQjCNEhVuKx5mbDRU12rwaE3xFTI5HWqw Good luck - I think you are definitely doing the right thing!
