How many Americans are there in Germany?

How do 3rd/4th/5th generation German-Americans feel about Germany?

  • Do they care for Germany at all in general? I know there are some Oktoberfest and pride festivals in the Midwestern United States held annually, but how do they feel to their native homeland? I'm 1st generation Russian-American, born there, and I feel immaculate pride toward Russia, more so than to America. But thats just me :)

  • Answer:

I'm 3rd Generation German-American - on both my mother's and father's sides (with a little Irish and Polish mixed in). I visited Germany once on a high-school exchange (I'm 40 now), I'd love to go back someday. I don't feel a really strong connection with Germany, other than referring to it as my grandparents' homeland... But I love German food, and beer, and I grew up attending German-themed festivals in Massachusetts. I don't put on lederhosen and dance to oompah music, but I also don't ridicule people who do. I suspect that sort of thing is more popular among 1st gen. German-Americans than it is among people in Germany. I work for a filmmaker and I have some connections with film festivals in Germany - I try to speak to the people there in German but it's been a while since I spoke it fluently... Does that help?

I am 9th generation German-American. My family has been here since the 1790's. I don't even use the term German-American. I don't know anyone there and really don't have a feeling about Germany one way or the other.
