Hard to find a job in Virginia Beach?

Looking to move to Virginia Beach, can anyone answer a few of my questions?

  • Hello! My husband and I are looking to move to Virginia Beach very soon but don't know much about the area except what we've heard from tourists and read online. We currently live in Los Angeles, CA so the weather is obviously a change.. how is the cost of living? what are the big tourist months? **how is the job market? (my husband is in the army so he's pretty much covered, but could i easily find a job after moving to VB?) how are gas prices? easy commuting from VB to surrounding colleges? is it really worth the move? or do you suggest other cities? The beach cities really attracted me to VB because they remind me of our so cal beaches.. and the military community really attracted my husband.. but any advice or warning would be great! thanks :)

We just moved from Pasadena, CA to Virginia Beach 2 years ago. The cost of living is cheaper, but not inexpensive. You can get a good two bedroom apartment for $1000-1800 depending on where you live. Groceries are about the same - the produce here is significantly lower in quality than SoCal. Gas is WAY cheaper. Tourist Season lasts roughly from Memorial Day until Labor Day. The job market is pretty good depending on what field you are in. Since your husband is in the Army, that is fairly easy. Depending on what field you are in, jobs are quite available. Since there is such a large turnover of military and civilian governement families, there are always positions available. Gas - as already stated, is lower. I just paid $3.81 this morning (6/13). Commuting: Any commute here is better than LA. Don't let anyone tell you different. ODU and Regent are both very accessible. Tidewater Community College and other smaller schools have campuses conveniently located. The cross-country move is a bit of a haul, but compared to to SoCal it is lush and green out here (ie: not desert). The ocean is less crowded and more accesable than LA. Overall, the pace of life is a bit more relaxed, friendly, and low-key. Suggesting other cities...near Virginia Beach? Norfolk. In the country? Denver.
