How to get my TomTom GPS to show me directions prior to driving?

Using GPS and Map quest driving directions. Is it a good idea to use both at the same time?

• I'm planning a small road trip and I wanted to know is it a good idea to use a GPS and driving directions from the internet? Would that confuse me if I'm trying to use to different sources and is GPS legit with it's directions? Is it best to also have a road map to bring just in case I get lost? The reason why I'm trying to get advise is because I have a hard time with direction and I always get lost even in my city and for years my friends and parents would say I should invest in a GPS tracker. Could some one give me some info or advise on traveling and not getting lost. I have been on many road trips but it was always with a group of people. This time around I will be going by my self.

  Although I have GPS satellite navigation available I prefer not to rely on it alone because I always like to have a general awareness of where I am, I don't quite feel lost that way. You do not get that blindly following the front of your car and sat nav directions. There can often be more than one way to get between two locations and both be perfectly viable, it just depends how the route has been calculated by the satellite navigation unit and the online route planner. I would suggest having a good old fashioned map available and then using just form of route planner because you will only get stressed if they start to conflict with each other.
