A question about France and Europe?

Which country in Europe do Americans feel most sentimental/idelogical attachment to?

  • Obviously, this of course depends on herritage of the American you ask, and of couse many Americans find their herriage outside Europe in Asia and South America, but at the end of the day, American culture, way of life and society is very much based on that of Europe - particularly Northern and Western Europe. Also, while there are many Americans of Italian heritage, I wouldn't say the main culture of the US has drawn from Italian culture particularly. There are pockets of Italian culture here and there, but it is very much a minority culture and most "Little Italy's" in the US today serve as tourist draws more than anything. It may seem like a stupid question, but spirutually speaking, where would you say the average Americans attachment lies? I'm sure many Americans don't think about it directly, but if they were asked, what do you think most would say? I personally would suspect either the UK, Germany or possibly France, although while France and the US were quite closely linked "back in the day", in the past 50 years or so, Franco-American relations have soured over certain "policy differences" to say the least. I would say the majority of Americans today feel absolutely no attachment to France.

  • Answer:

England - can almost say they are like family. Well...a family member that we kicked out of our "house" in the 1700's but still family.

Ireland. Lots of them reckon they're Irish.. when only their great grand mother came from there or something! HAHA

I believe most people would say the United Kingdom (England/Scotland) and Ireland. Many of us have ancestors that came from these countries. Our language, culture, way of life, and society are very much similar to these countries. I know that personally I feel most sentimental about the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Ireland! 1/4 of Americans (that's what they say I think it's higher) can trace their lineage back to the Emerald Isle.

France, no. I don't think they're too fond of us. U.K. Probably most likely. Close second would be Ireland.

Americans don't care about any country outside of the United States. France, England and the U.S. remain steadfast and interdependent in all facets of life including foreign policy, so you are quite wrong about the US. officially rejecting France. That was media invention. The French provide the U.S. with a lot of intelligence, as do the British, since both countries are experienced, enlightened, mature, informed.

The UK. The UK has sided and supported us in most of our latest wars, their political policies are similar to ours and refuse to adopt the Euro.
