Things to do in Myrtle Beach?

We are driving from Chicago to Myrtle beach this spring. We need to stop along the way (have 2 kids 6,2) where is the best place to stop? What could we do on our break? Also, what are some FREE or cheap things to do in MB besides swim in ocean/pool! We are going end of March 1st of April- can we swim in the ocean or will it be too cold??????

It depends on which you are taking for your drive. I drove it from Minnesota and stopped in Indy because it was about halfway. I would suggest some mountain sightseeing in Kentucky or Tennessee. It is very pretty driving through there. Free things in Myrtle Beach. There is the Burroughs & Chapin art museum. Totally free, no admission. The upstairs is more geared towards kids. More of a folk exhibit right now. The main gallery has a watercolor themed show going on. Some great art can be seen there. I walked the beach yesterday and saw a surfer in the water. I think it might be a bit chilly, but I think you will be able to go in. We should be having some nice days by then.
