Is North Dakota over the worst of the floods?

? Floods and tornadoes in South Dakota?

  • How many floods and tornadoes does South Dakota get per year and where does it happen most often? (like what cities, towns, whatever)

  • Answer:

Floods and tornadoes can happen anywhere in the state, but they seem to be more frequent on the eastern side (Sioux Falls area) and in central SD near the Missouri River. I live near Rapid City and the Black Hills on the western side of the state and it's rare for us to have any major flooding or tornadoes. The last major flood was in Rapid City in 1972. There is some minor flooding every few years, but there are flood plains in place that are able to handle the water and no damage is done. As for tornadoes, we have occasional funnel cloud sightings, but I haven't heard of a tornado touching down in the Black Hills. There was one that took out a school house a week ago in the town of Faith, but that is out on the plains, east of here. I hope this helps! :)
