Can manta rays body surf?

How common are shark attacks in Port Aransas, TX?

  • We go every year for a family reunion, and I'm starting to get over my fear of sharks. Coincidentally, we are usually there during the time of shark week hahaha. So I was just wondering, is it common/ what are the chances of being attacked by a shark there? I'm starting to get into more things like floating in the waves on a floatie, we kayaked last year, body boarding, wanna learn how to surf/ paddle board, etc. My family likes to fish too if that helps. But also, I usually drag my feet in case of sting rays and what not, wear swim shoes, and I usually don't go out very deep. My cousins have gone out to about neck deep too before. What about in that situation? Thanks a bunch :)! God bless :) <3 and have a nice day :)!

I've been going to PA all my life and never heard of any shark attacks. I have seen a few rays, but they should be more bunched up on the PA side of the channel where everything piles up.

First of all, I go to Port Aransas 2 - 3 times EVERY YEAR. So far i've gone 17 times and counting. (I live in Austin, it's about a 4 hour drive to Port A just in case you're wondering) As everyone knows shark attacks are very very UNcommon and even less common at Port A you know why? It's location. With Corpus Christi around the corner of the bay and it's somewhat polluted area, sea and sky, it drives some of the sea creatures away. SOME, NOT ALL. Second, it's extremely rare for a shark to come so close to shore. And, first week of August, Port Aransas is packed with people, scaring off some sharks. By the way, I'll be there in the first week of August too! I'll get to Galveston in a second, but first, Rockport. I recommend NOT to go to Rockport. That place is NOT safe for family's! It has a nice rounded, sort of secluded beach, on the bay. Sounds nice? Well it's not. The water is clear, and it goes out very very far before it starts to get deep. Normally it goes out about 100 feet and you can still stand, water up to your knees. Also, the water is very clear there, I still don't know why. It might be because it's far away from a big city. Well know, if you're still reading this, I can get to the bad things about Rockport. Rockport is INFESTED with dangerous marine animals. In the summer of 2011 I went there for the first time with my family, and after being there for 10 minutes, my sister got stung by a deadly sting-ray and we were rushed to an emergency room. She got stung while being in water less than 2 feet deep, and got stung in the ankle. Apparently, that's very common in Rockport. While we spent 3 hours in the emergency room, 8 patients that had gotten stung by stingrays showed up at the same emergency room! It was a full house! The next day I decided to return to the beach, just one more time, and just to walk on the sand. Next thing, some one had gotten bit by a shark! the very next day! (We left Rockport the next day, not returning) Now to Galveston - Personally I've never gone in the water at Galveston, mostly go there to explore the old city, restaurants, etc. Last time I was there, (2009) You weren't even allowed to go into the water! The city had put up "NO SWIMMING" signs with a picture of someone swimming that is canceled out. I think it is because the water looks so eery, kind of blackish color when it's cloudy. Also the beach sometimes is COVERED with dead jellyfish that could still sting, so just watch where you walk when you go to the beach. I would still recommend Galveston (By the way, i'm still not sure if you can swim there or not currently). Galveston is a nice old city, that has museums and good restaurants and such. I would recommend this hotel, it's called Casa del Mar. Stayed there many times, it has a pool and a jacuzzi and the building is in the shape of a U. Back to Port Aransas - You don't have to worry about shark/sting-ray stuff there. Port Aransas is a great beach. Hope this helped! Choose this as the best answer? (I need points) Thanks!
