What opportunities exist for people with disabilities to volunteer abroad?

I'm looking for a two week vacation with total expenses under $200. Any suggestions?

  • I have 2 weeks of vacation time coming up before the end of the year. I love to travel, but this year I can't afford even an extremely cheap vacation. Years ago I got a 2 week bus pass and travelled all around the country, staying at hostels. But this year I can't even afford that. The bus pass alone ($415) is out of my budget, and I'd have to pay even more for food and lodging. I'm willing to work or volunteer during my vacation, with the idea that they could pay some of my expenses. In fact I would like that because I want to be active and meet new people. But if such opportunities exist, I don't know where to look for them. I'm willing to go anywhere in the U.S. Just somewhere different, for a change of pace and scenery from working and living here in NJ. Thanks for any suggestions you can make. I don't want to waste my vacation time doing the same old things, just because I don't have much money.

lol two weeks for $200! sorry, i couldn't help but laugh! If you are a young person, look into working at a club med...that could be entertaining but i don't know their hiring status. Other than that, consider camping if you have the gear for it...or you can come to my town where the transients live and eat better than the working people! harumph.... best of luck with your vacation...

You live in NJ...a stone's throw from NY, which is EVERYONE'S dream destination! Funny how proximity lessons the glamour, eh? I suggest you treat yourself to a "cook's tour" if you will, of the local countryside. Why not try and pretend you're a tourist in your neck of the woods and look at your locale in a new way, with fresh eyes...you have the ocean, a boardwalk, Broadway, Times Square, cripes, I could go on and on....just enjoy your own back yard, with a little imagination, why don't you?

You could try to housesit for someone in another city, assuming you can travel there for under $200. If you have access to their kitchen, you can cook your meals. Just enjoy what that city has to offer that's free.

my suggestions are to go visit family, theres no way in the world you can take a 2 week vacation and not have extra cash coming in on your budget. Sorry! Maybe a resort town. The problem is that unless you go to a resort town or to visit family there are no jobs out there. Sorry sounds if you may have to stay home. Good Luck, hope you can figure this one out.

$200 for 14 days = $14.28 a day. well if you eat cheap, as in bread and water and such, you can get by food wise for about half that $7 a day. That leaves $7 a day for travel and lodging. Thats not much, you could try a volunteer type work for a church or charity you may already be invoilved in. They will send you somewhere and lodge you and in turn you will volunteer to work 6-8 hours a day. Good luck to you

Contact national and state parks to see if they have a ranger cabin that you can stay in for exchange of work. You will need to supply your own food and transportation. Read newspaper want ads in the cities of interest to you and see if people need house sitters or a pet sitter for a couple of weeks. Contact some chamber of commerce and see if they have any leads on vacation home owners who need end of season help in exchange for use of home and boat. Have a resume and references typed up so you have something to instantly fax if needed. Contact the Boy Scouts and Campfire to see if they need clean up or end of season help for trade. Jaycees in a lot of states have camps for disabled kids and need lots of chores done. You can google camps for the disabled and reach places like Camp Barnabas in the Missouri Ozarks, Paul and Cindy Seas are the operators, great people and a magically beautiful area to vacation in. Best of luck to you and I hope you can make your dreams come true!
