What is Norfolk like?

What is life in Norfolk, VA like?

• I am going to be doing an internship with PETA there (the animal rights group) and I would consider moving/working there if I liked the area. What is it like? Liberal or conservative, how are the people, how is the weather? how is the cost of living and things to do? thanks!!

  Cost of living isn't too bad, but it's been going up for the last few years. I moved here from a place that's very expensive, so for me, it's lower. Other people I know moved here from cheaper areas. So it really depends on where you're coming from. The weather is kinda cold and rainy at the moment. We have 5-minute weather -> don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it'll change. When it rains, it RAINS. When it's hot, it's HOT. Gets quite humid too. But it's tolerable. As far as things to do...depends on what kinds of things you like to do. There's some good restaurants, lots of parks, beaches (best when the tourists are gone, though), etc. It's a pretty conservative area. The 700 Club is in Virginia Beach if that tells you anything. In general, it's not bad. As with any city, it has its positives and negatives. A lot of people complain about the traffic, but I came from an area with obscenely terrible traffic, so I don't think it's that bad. I moved here without ever visiting first. I've been here almost 4 years, and it's not a bad area to live. I would highly recommend spending a weekend here before you move though, just to get an idea of what it's like.
