How do you go about hiking Mt. Rainier?

Question about hiking Mt Washington - First Timer?

  • Hi, thanks for answering, my friend(s) and are possibly going to hike Mt Washington this weekend. I've been to Mt. Greylock and a few other mountains in the Amherst, MA area. (I live in MA). It'll be my first time hiking up Mt Washington. My friend(s) are fit, and I'm decently fit. Not too much experience of hiking, although I've hiked a little every now and then (it's been awhile). I'm trying to plan the timing for such a trip. We're thinking of taking Bootts Spurr up...Lions Head down. Tuckermans seems too much of a crowded area, don't want to go there. How long should we plan to take to go up and down the mountain? I've read 6-7 hours on one post. Is that correct for a novice hiker? I'm going to guess we'd be going top speed 2mph. Thanks for your help, Eric.

  • Answer:

read the link i posted below based on my own experience and my trail guidebook i could tell you that lions head trail is MUCH rougher but better views and less cowds...in the past i've done lions head up while fresh and tuckermans down since its the easier trail--your energy will be zapped away so i usually always choose easier routes for the way down http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/washington.html#Boott
