Does anyone know anything about the area around Huntington metro station in Alexandria, VA?
-
Im trying to apartment hunt from out of state and I'm not familiar with the area. Is this area safe, nice, etc.? Is there stuff to do in this area or is it mostly residential? Is it safe to park at the metro station? Any other advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Answer:
I lived in Jefferson Manor (a neighborhood of duplex homes) last year, and it is right next to the Huntington metro station. You will be able to walk to the metro in the mornings (5 minute walk). The neighborhood is spotty. Within the first week of living there my car was slightly vandalized (bent my antenna and license plates), homes have been known to get broken into also. I wouldn't recommend moving to Belle Haven because you will end up having to drive to the metro station and paying for parking, plus Belle Haven is overpriced in my opinion. I am happy I moved to Arlington. If you must live in Alexandria, I would recommend being inside the beltway, you will pay more for rent, but there are less shady characters. Things to do in Alexandria... I recommend visiting Mount Vernon, I really enjoyed it, and I am surprised that its not as popular as other tourist attractions in the area. You can also visit Old Town Alexandria which is nice. Although be careful when dining there, many places are way overpriced and the food is average.

I used to live around DC. I can't exactly remember the Huntington station. However, in general, areas around metros are prime real estate. Also, Alexandria is full of fantastic restaurants and things to do. Plus, being near a metro, you are minutes away from most anywhere in DC. That being said, I lived in Rockville, MD - which is on a whole other metro line.

Alexandria is like a checker board; moving a few blocks in any direction puts you in a different world. I used to live in Old Town off King Street. When I lived there, you stayed near the river (Potomac) and away from neighborhoods near the highway (495). They made a bunch of nice looking townhomes, etc. near a metro stop (Eisenhower) after I left that looked more affordable and up-to-date than the Old Town area. Check out that neighborhood.

To follow what some others have said...I've lived in and around the Huntington area in Alexandria for 35 years. It's "blue collar" in pockets and the majority of the crime in the area is petty crime along Huntington Ave and Rt. 1. Parking crimes at the Metro station is on the high side. If you are apartment hunting, check out "Montebello". It's an amazing condo that is gated. There is a club house with bowling, workout room, indoor and outdoor pools that are amazing and shops and restaurant. My mom has lived there 8 years and I love her being safe. There is a shuttle that takes you to the Metro...which is walking distance...but I would NEVER walk to Metro! Also check out Belle Haven area...very safe! Try Realtor.com and search rentals on zip code 22303 (huntington area); Kingstowne (22310 & 22315); Old Town (22314) Otherwise, stick to Kingstowne or even consider Old Town. Lots of "english basement" apartments that are very reasonable (under $1,000) a month. Old Town is the "best" place to live. Walk to metro...live and work in town...restaurants, shops, parks and water. We have it all! For renters, its a bargain in my opinion.
