What are the best museums to see in DC?
-
My boyfriend and I are going to DC for 2 nights in January and can not decide what to see. We have both been there before but never together and we can not decide what museums or sites to see. Since we have a short amount of time and limited funds-what do you suggest?

Answer:
All the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art and the Holocaust memorial museum are free. (There are others, too, but these are notable.) My favorites are: The National Gallery of Art, both buildings, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Holocaust Memorial Museum. But check out the whole Smithsonian (start your visit at the castle) and follow your interests. You'll enjoy most what interests you. Make sure you visit the Memorials down the mall - this is a good thing to do in the evening when the museums are closed. Free tours of the Capitol, Washington Monument, LIbrary of Congress, and of course a visit to the ARchives could also be listed.

All of the Smithsonian museums are free. The Museum of Natural History is the largest, and is awesome, and will take the better part of one of those days. Men love the Air and Space, and while it is large, there are few exhibits (planes take up a lot of space). National Gallery of Art always has nice exhibits. My personal favorite is the Museum of American History. The good thing is that the Smithsonian has many museums in the same area along the mall (down by 12th and Constitution), so you should be able to see several w/o a lot of travel.

I'm pretty sure the American history museum's closed but the natural history museums nice and I highly recomend the World War II and Vietnam memorial which are near each other or the Jefferson or Lincoln memorial and you HAVE to see the Washington Monument, there is also the Air and space museum there's a bigger Air and Space museum but it's near Dulles Airport and like 30 minutes away from DC

I really liked the museum of African Art. I think it's really under-rated. If the weather is nice, visit the FDR memorial on the Tidal Basin. There are 4 sections, depicting his 4 terms as President. Very informative and interesting. The Portrait Gallery just re-opened, and might interest you. The Spy Museum (not free) is across the street.

Visit the Bureau of Engraving & Printing for a free tour. We also love the Museum of Natural History.
