As I said before, Chesapeake Beach doesn't have any beach. There is no place to bbq and you'll have to pay a rather steep fee to sit on a patch of orange, coarse sand. Check out Sandy Point State Park instead. It is just before the Bay Bridge, a very easy drive from Rt. 50. There is an entrance fee, but there are lots of areas for picnicking the beach is huge and very well maintained, there are bathrooms and changing areas and netting in the water to keep the jellyfish out. You can fish from the jetty as well as from the shore. The views are really lovely. Sandy Point is on the Chesapeake Bay. You can't see the ocean from either Chesapeake Beach or Sandy Point, but the water at Sandy Point is much, much cleaner. Sandy Point also has lifeguards. Feel free to bring along a picnic. Get there early and spend the day. Bring an umbrella, chairs, blankets and towels, as well as plenty of drinks and food and sunscreen. I think you'll be very pleased. It's a great way to spend the day.

Well, we went last year (from NOVA too) and weren't impressed. The beach is very small; water is kind of mucky too. Not the typical beach we are used to by any means. We set up chairs near the "cliff' and were plagued with stinging flies and ants - yuck!. We did enjoy sifting through the incoming water for sharks' teeth, but that was hardly enough to fill the day. No facilites to BBQ that we could see. There is nothing at all to the town itself - no good restaurants, public fishing pier, etc. All in all we were disappointed. You might have more fun at one of the water parks nearby - I think there is a new one opened in southern Fairfax county this week and it looks like a lot of fun for families.
