DC METRO CARD LOST DATA - WHAT DO I DO!?

  • I am a visitor to Washington, DC and put $15 on a DC Metro fare card yesterday. I went on one trip, then tried coming back today and when I inserted into the slot, it spit the card back out and told me to see an attendant. I saw an attendant, but they just let me through and dismissed my protests that I had money left on the card!!! They were very unhelful people. :( Please tell me what to do! Can I somehow transfer the money left on the card ($13.50) to another card? PLEASE HELP! I don't want to lose my money!!!

  • Answer:

The only way that you could get that fare card value back is to go to the Metro Center station, or fill out a form and mail it to the Metro Center station. They can help get your money transferred to a new card. Honestly, it's happened to me so many times and is very annoying. I don't find it worth it to try to retrieve the value. The best decision I made was to purchase a SmartTrip card. It's hard plastic, can't lose value. You can add money onto it at any time and it will even let you through if you don't have enough money (declining balance). They're great if you frequent the metro alot. You can buy them at any metro station. Hope this helped!

That happened to me one time. It was straightened out when I existed. It had failed to register in their computer that I had left on my last ride. Hope that is what happened to you, if so when he let you back in and you got out again, it would have self corrected itself. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick a "Best Answer", even if it is not mine. That way we can tell if we really do help people.

This seems like a lot of freaking out over $13.50. You could have found the answer on the Metro website pretty easily. Damaged or malfunctioning passes and farecards can be exchanged or replaced only after the malfunction is verified by a station manager. He or she will complete a fare adjustment envelope and give it to you. Retain the stub with the receipt number and drop the self-addressed envelope in any mailbox. A replacement farecard will be mailed to you. For an immediate replacement, take the envelope to a Metro sales office. For more information about exchanges of tokens, damaged farecards or passes, call Metro Customer Assistance at 202-637-1328. The next time you go to a station ask for the form you need and take it to the sales office at Metro Center. The station attendant probably will let you through even with the malfunctioning farecard.
