How often are the handrails/poles in NYC subway cars cleaned?

Relocated from NNJ/NYC. Any direct bus service from tyson to DC. Does DC have bus hub like NYC Port Authority?

  • though NJ doesn't have NYC subway it is part of PATH. So is there same thing here in VA/DC? I do not see it. Why are entire highway HOV? There is NO ALTERNATE highway coming from Tyson to GalleryPlace DC. 495 to GW pkway is only 1, where are the others? Or is this area such a southern hick area I am now regretting the move. I look at transit options for NYC and it's pages of direct service to and from at all hours, but do not see it here. The 'Metro' is not subway in my opinion, it is train and breaks down too often, again, without any alternate route. I don't mind failures in system (cars off track, highways stopped) as long as I can use another route just as easily. Where is that for to/from Tyson??? Have I not found it (that's why the post) or is this area just waaaay behind the transit infrastructure I am used to? I'm beginning to think the latter. I used to hop on bus in NNJ in burbs, relax for 1hr20mins and BAM, i'm in heart of NYC. So where/what is the equiv in DC/VA?

  • Answer:

Metro is a good system, with cleaner and more comfortable trains than the New York Subway (which I rode for many years). But, as you realize, it doesn't go much beyond the inner suburbs, such as Arlington and Alexandria. There is Metro bus service to locations a bit further out. Beyond that in Virginia there are some commuter buses, plus the Virginia Railway Express to Manassas and Fredericksburg. Tysons Corner is underserved by mass transit. If you read the local newspaper you'll constantly read about plans to extend the Metro Orange line to Tysons and then to Dulles Airport. Everyone wants to build it, but the Federal government hasn't yet agreed to kick in their share of the funding. I suspect that the next administration, particularly if it is democratic, will agree to pay for the line. It will then be about 3-4 years before it is built, but at the end there'll be Metrorail service between DC and Tysons. In the meantime, you can take several bus lines between Tysons Corner and Metro subway stations. For instance, the 28T bus runs between Tysons Corner and the West Falls Church Metro station. For more information, check the Metro website: http://www.wmata.com And yes, this isn't New Jersey....and there isn't anything like the Port Authority Bus Terminal. But then again there are far fewer people in the DC area than in the New York metropolitan area.

Metro was designed to move federal workers into the city for their jobs and out again and has morphed into something far beyond what its planners had expected. So the infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the growth. Another problem is the planners didn't think to build redundant tracks so they have to shut the system down for track maintenance. But at least there is Metro, as imperfect as it is. As the other person mentioned, there has been wrangling over a possible Metro line that goes through Tysons with many people wanting a tunnel and the government wanting elevated rail. I believe some of the funding is held up over that. I don't have a stake in this, as I live in the District, but if the business owners and residents want the tunnel, let them have the tunnel. And whatever extra costs there are, they should be happy to pay them. To get from the Tysons area to Gallery Place, you can drive to one of the Metro stations (underserved by parking unfortunately) and hop the Orange Line to L'Enfant Plaza. You then transfer to the Yellow or Green line to Gallery Place. There are also several buses that go through the Tysons area and serve the Orange Line. The further you go into the suburbs, though, the worse the transit options get. Things are much better in, say, Arlington and Alexandria. I'm not a big believer in bus hubs. I used to live in Central Florida (and if you think transit is bad here, try living there), where most of the lines went to a central downtown hub, and that was incredibly inefficient.
