Metro introducing express trains?

  • I ride the blue line every morning and evening between Pentagon City and Foggy Bottom. It is a little frustrating during peak rush hour times to stop at Arlington Cemetary everyday so that an average of 1.3 people can either board or exit the Metro. Sometimes absolutely no one is getting on or off. This morning when I boarded at Pentagon City the conductor came on and announced that it was an express train and would not be stopping at Arlington Cemetary. This is the first time I have experienced this. Is the Metro moving in this direction or was it a fluke? Has anyone else ever experienced this?

    It's not something that is standard. From the beginning, Arlington Cemetery has been an "optional" station, due to the low ridership. Your train must have been instructed by Metro Control to skip the station in order to make up for an earlier delay. As for the future, express trains aren't really an option, since Metro wasn't built (unlike New York) with express tracks. The most that you'll see will be an occasional skipped station, and consideration of plans to re-route some trains, such as the proposal for some blue line trains to bypass the congestion at Rosslyn by going across the yellow line bridge.

They're planning on reworking the blue, yellow, and orange line trains some time in the next year to provide faster service on the blue line and more trains on the orange line. Some blue line trains will run the yellow line route north to the end of the line and there will be more trains on the orange line in the VA suburbs that will run the blue line route at the eastern end of the line.
