What bus can I take to get from Rochester, NY to Washington DC?
-
I'm at college at the University of Rochester, and I'd like to get down to the DC area (I'm from Maryland, but DC works just as well). Ideally the trip would be a straight-shot via bus, but most buses I know that go to DC do so from NYC, not Rochester. Are there any buses that I could use to easily get to back to DC by Friday?

Answer:
Greyhound is really the only interstate bus system in the U.S. Greyhound from Rochester to DC will take 11-13 hours and it looks like the cost is around $70 one way. If there is a bus that goes to NYC from Rochester you could take something like Bolt Bus or Mega bus to DC but that's a 4-5 hour trip so it may not be faster depending on how long it takes to get to NYC and how long of a layover you'd have. A quick check on Expedia.com shows that AirTran flies nonstop from Rochester to BWI for $140 roundtrip (including taxes and fees) and the flight is about one hour. The bus doesn't seem like such a good deal in that case.

I just checked Southwest from Buffalo to BWI. They have a price that is $93.00 plus fees available most times on the web if you buy 2 weeks early. And if you are from this area, you know that you have the B30 bus into Greenbelt from BWI you also have Annapolis buses and Baltimore buses. Air saves a lot of time. And another thing about Southwest, if you need to cancel and reapply to another ticket, there is no charges. They do not give you the money back, but keep it in reserve so you can buy another ticket, and sometimes it will be cheaper and sometimes it will be a little more, but at least it is not the $100 to $150 charge the other airlines use. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick a "Best Answer", even if it is not mine. That way we can tell if we really do help people.

Don't take the bus, it's about 10 hours longer than if you took the train. Amtrak makes a stop in NYC and the wait is about 2 hours. I've taken amtrak trains so many times and would definitely recommend them, they don't have to stop for gas, and like I said before - they are much faster than a bus! Usually cheaper too. Edit: I was exaggerating when I said "10 hours longer" I've never personally taken the train to DC from here, but every time I take the train home to Vermont it takes about 8 hours and the bus would take about 13-14. I don't know if you plan on doing this a lot, but if you do you can get a student advantage card which takes something like 15 - 30% off your ticket. Either way, anything from here to DC will stop in NYC causing your ticket prices to skyrocket.
