Which is a better city to in which to live and practice law: New York or Washington, D.C.?
-
I'm debating which city to go to law school and ultimately practice (I grew up in and currently reside in New York). How is city/suburban living in D.C. - is the city as lousy as its reputation? I am really a city person and couldn't live in a metro area where I couldn't walk around an explore the urban center. Also, are there any areas of law I could practice in D.C. but not in New York? I am particularly interested in government and international practice.

Answer:
You don't need to decide where to practice, you can just decide now where to go to law school. Obviously, DC has more governmental law happening, but international law would exist in both areas (due to the UN in New York). The reputation of DC is ancient history - there were a few years in the late 80s when drug issues (we had a drug-using mayor, remember?) were a huge problem. Even then, I worked downtown and walked freely in most of the downtown and tourist core with out a thought. Crime is probably comparable to New York, or any large urban center. This is a beautiful city - we have great public transport, we are incredibly walkable. We don't have skyscrapers, but we have an incredibly vital, cultural urban center. Why not go to school here at one of the fantastic law schools, Georgetown, GW or American - even George Mason has a law school in Arlington - then decide where you want to practice after giving yourself a chance to experience that city? Just because you go to school in a city doesn't mean you have to sit for the bar there, or practice there. A GW or Georgetown degree will be good in New York. :-)

I don't know a whole lot about the law scene here (except that there is a big one...but you obviously already know that). However as far as the metro area...it's probably not comparable to NYC. It's still a city, definitely, and actually has a great metro system and it's very pedestrian-friendly because of all the tourists. Before deciding to move here, especially long term to start a career, I definitely think you should try to come and visit first. I'm a city person and I'm satisfied with DC. It's not perfect...crime rates are high, as you probably know, and it's not a typical city in the sense of skyscrapers and such...but it's actually really beautiful, and if you're interested in governemnent it's definitely the place to be (duh). And international practice...there are embassies everywhere!

Interested in government & international practice!! Georgetown IF you can get in, otherwise American okay. Tunney is at American and that's the only reason to consider the school. Importance of law school is the contacts---want the COURT eventually Harvard & Yale.
