How to find a secluded cabin to rent?

Secluded cabin/cottage in the middle of the woods for rent within 3 hours of DC?

  • I'm interested in a nature getaway weekend in the Shenandoah Valley, or anywhere within 3 hour drive of DC for that matter. Can anyone give recommendations on where to stay that is isolated/secluded/in the middle of the woods (basically I don't want to see hordes of tourists as I step right outside)? The only things important to me are private bathroom and wood-burning fireplace, don't care about phone/TV. Needless to say I would prefer to be close to trails, waterfalls/lakes, wineries and outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, fall foliage viewing, etc. Thank you for any suggestions.

I always check http://www.homeaway.com/ and http://www.vrbo.com/ for vacation home options. Here are some that I found with your criteria. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p151807 $525/week, local activities: tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, mountaineering, roller blading. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p190608 $100/night http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p130761 $100/night

While not exactly secluded, you might want to check out the Wintergreen resort, which otherwise meets all of your needs. It's set atop the Blue Ridge, about three hours from DC. There are numerous quality wineries in the surrounding countryside. Wintergreen has a series of hiking trails, plus it adjoins the Appalachian Trail. Most of the rooms are actually small apartments in low-slung buildings scattered around the Wintergreen property. You won't see hoards of people anywhere, except on the ski slopes if you choose to go over the winter. http://www.wintergreenresort.com

Check the websites for The Woods, Wintergreen (both in West Virginia) and for Deep Creek Lake and Rocky Gap in Maryland. None is very crowded right now and each has more isolated areas without much happening.

Yes, homeaway is a great site to search for cabin rentals. You could also try: http://www.craigslist.org http://www.vacationrentals411.com Good Luck!
