Does anyone know the nice-ish places to live in the DC area? We are moving there probably soon.?

The advantage of working in DC is that you can live in northern virginia, southern maryland or DC proper and still be within commuting distance. If money is an issue, a lot of people live outside the metro-DC area, but there is the commute to deal with (if you drive) or the millions who use the metro every morning. I lived in southern maryland (clinton) and worked in DC, and b/c of personal reasons I havd to move, but it was with reluctance. hope this helped...feel free to reply if you need more info.

Try http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/ You may have trouble though as a warning. $1500-$1700 does not buy much these days unless you are commuting long distances. And you DO NOT want to be doing that. It is ugly. You can easily find yourself spending 4 hours a day or more on the road. Try the Springfield/Franconia area. It is South of the Pentagon with Metro access not far. Metro is a life savior if commuting downtown and especially the Pentagon. You may be able to squeak out a rental for that much. It will most likely be an older house. If you work at the Pentagon and are active military, many live in Ft Belvior. They have new housing that will only charge your housing allotment.

I'm originally from the Maryland suburbs of DC (very close in) but I'm kinda not as familiar with the Northern Virginia suburbs. I know someone who lives near the West Falls Church Metro station which is I believe actually part of Arlington. The Pentagon is in Northern VA. In the Maryland suburbs, Silver Spring is nice and they have a new downtown center and lots of good restaurants, and the Metro (DC's subway system) goes there too. BUT that's on the other side of downtown from the Pentagon... However as far as living in DC goes in general: The region, in particular Northern VA, has terrible traffic congestion. It's hot and humid in the summer. It's expensive, and the people are not the friendliest. But the Metro system is very nice and efficient. That and the fact that DC has the Smithsonian and lots of monuments all in close proximity to each other, and they're all free, are the only things I miss about DC. (In other words it's a better city to visit than to live in, at least in my opinion). Haha sorry to sound so negative, as much as I complain about it I do miss it there sometimes. And a good website to check housing rentals and a lot of other stuff too is www.craigslist.org (I'm sure you've heard of it but it's a good resource).

The downside of D.C., it an be a pretty dangerous place. Even walking in the "daylight" hours, in good neighborhoods. Me and my mom, were held up with a gun, because this thug wanted my purse. He threatened to "shoot" me. We were walking home, from the library, on 16th street. My mom had her purse grabbed from her so fast, (another inccident), that the force threw her to the ground. She used to Teach in D.C. We also lived in an exclusive part of D.C., and a few blocks from there, a person was murdered in the parking area of their Apartment Complex. Also someone was found in their Apartment, in the area. This was S.W. part of Washington. I'm sure that Crime has gotten worse since then. All i'm saying, is that their is a lot of Crime. There is a "Bad Side," as well as the "Good." People are desperate. Washington is an **interesting place, just be careful... **I think that the public is allowed to "sit in," when Congress is in session. I think that when the light is lit, on top of the Dome of the Capitol, that means it is in session.
