What do you tip a cabbie in italy?

In the Washington DC area (ie: NOT New York City or the midwest), what is an average amount to tip a cabbie.?

  • 1. I don't mean a short haul of $5-$10 but usually something that involves going to Dulles or National airport and is about a 20-40 minute ride where the fare (without tip) tends to average $45-$55. 2. I get that you tip more for extraordinary service. But when I'm traveling light (only carry-on), no heroics are involved, just a good ride where the cabbie doesn't get lost or impose his politics or music tastes on me, what is an appropriate tipping percentage?

  • Answer:

I live near Union Station in the city, so to Dulles its $50 and to BWI its about $75 (I recall). I'll give a total of about $65 for Dulles and $95 for BWI. So $10-15 tip. DCA is a $16 cab ride for me, and I'll always give the cab $20.

Other answers

For a cab ride of $45 to $50, give a tip of 10% rounded up - so $5 tip is good for both.

Usually around 10% for the ride only and tip up and then round the total with tip up to the next dollar, and if the cabbie loads luggage add an extra dollar per bag.

15% is standard here. I tip more because I have a heavy suitcase the cabby usually helps with, but 15% is standard.
