How many automotive industries are there in Baltimore?

If Baltimore is bigger than Washington, DC, then why does DC seem so much bigger?

  • The other day I asked if Baltimore was bigger than DC, and everyone says Baltimore is definitely bigger. But, I live in Baltimore and I visit DC often and DC seems much bigger in area size and population. DC feels more like New York to me than Baltimore ever will, and DC's downtown is much bigger than Baltimore's. I have literally walked from one end of downtown Baltimore to the next and back in 45 minutes. I could never do that in DC, but someone told me that Baltimore is 200 square miles and DC is only 68. It just does not seem right lol. The only thing bigger in Baltimore is to me is the buildings because they are taller.

  • Answer:

Washington doesn't even really have a downtown. Just a touristy area with a lot of large government buildings. I've always thought of Baltimore as the bigger city. Baltimore is only 92 square miles (81 square miles if you don't count the water). DC is 68 sq miles however (61 if you don't count the water).

Probably because Baltimore encompasses a large residential area compared to DC. The actual acreage of DC may be smaller, but it has more non-residential buildings, and everything is packed tighter together. Baltimore is kind of sprawling, but the actual "downtown" area of Baltimore is MUCH smaller than DC. And the population of DC is probably larger.

Are you talking about bigger in area, or bigger in population, or higher in population density?
