The best day to drive from Washington D.C. to New England?

  • What is the best day to drive up route 95 from Richmond, VA to Massachusetts? I'm looking to avoid as much heavy traffic as I can. Lately, I have noticed extremely heavy traffic going northbound along the garden state turnpike up through New Jersey and over the Tapanzee bridge on Sunday evenings. I don't know why. Is Saturday a better day to do it?

Sunday night is come home from the weekend time. That's why you'll find traffic heavy on the Tappan Zee at that time. Saturday is the best time. Most people drive to their weekend getaways Friday after work and return home Sunday evening. And of course, weekdays are out as the normal commuter traffic is out in full force.

I'd leave Richmond about 8 or 9 Saturday night. This will put you in Boston (You didn't say where in Mass you were going) 7 or 8 Sunday morning. Straight up I 95 Hammer down.

Very early Saturday morning after midnight and you avoid all the traffic... why would you take the Tappan Zee... follow 95 to the GW and use the Cross Bronx Expressway !
