Car Rental Pick Up Location in Seattle?
-
Hi Folks My wife and I are from the UK and are doing a road trip in the States in July, we arrive in Seattle and were wondering where is the best place to pick up a rental car? The best and cheapest company for what we need seem to be National, and we can choose to pick up the car from either the airport or downtown seattle. I will be doing the driving but I was wondering where you think I should pick up the car. We don't get into Seattle until about 8 in the evening after a 12 hour flight. Do you think it would be easier and make more sense to get a cab to a hotel and pick up the car the following day in downtown seattle? Or are the roads so complicated in a busy downtown seattle that it might just be more easier and straight forward picking up the car from the airport? Thanks for your help, any suggestions are welcome!

Answer:
Two points, first is you rent a vehicle from National do so from the airport as they will allow you to select your own car from a long line of available vehicles ensuring you get what you prefer! Also, if for some reason you do choose to go into the city and get a car from Downtown the next morning, do not take a cab, they are very expensive! There is a direct light rail line from SeaTac airport into Downtown that is clean, safe and quick and costs only $2.50 per person. Keep in mind though, the National location in the city will simply give you whatever car they happen to have available where again the airport gives you the choice! Best of luck!

You can have your vehicle straight away at the airport as you won't have to wait for any shuttles that will help you across to the car rental parking. You can simply book online and get the car straight away when you check out. You can easily book at http://www.pointcarhire.com/ as they offer cars at the pick up location specified by you. Used it many times when I travel anywhere in US and sometimes even out of country and now prefer them only.

For pure ease, I would suggest getting the car from the airport, but if you decide against it, there is a light rail from the airport to downtown if you decide to stay at a hotel around the airport (most of 'em have free buses to and from the airport as well).

If you are staying in downtown Seattle, one option would be to take Link Light Rail into downtown (it's easy and cheap and only about 35 minutes) and not pick up the car until you are ready to head out of town. You'll pay to park that car at almost any downtown hotel - usually $25-30 per day. For any sightseeing you'll be doing in Seattle I'd just take the bus - it's free within the downtown zone and not that expensive outside of the downtown zone. Then when you want to pick up the car, you can either take light rail back to the airport to get the car or pick it up from their downtown location. Check the rates for both. There are often "airport convenience fees" attached to rental cars picked up at the airport and it may be quite a bit cheaper to rent a car from elsewhere. If you want to book a hotel near the airport, nearly all have free shuttles to/from the airport. So when you arrive, go to the hotel without the rental car, then in the morning take the free shuttle back to the airport to pick up the car. Unless you are planning an early AM departure out of town it will save you a day's rental on the car.
