What kinds of clothing should I pack for a July trip to southern Alaska and Seatle?
-
The weather is mild around the Vancouver/Seatle/Sitka area but I'm not sure if I should pack shorts opting for 60/70 degree weather or for 50 degree weather with heavier sweaters?

Answer:
Bring a little of everything. Seattle and will probably be in the upper 70s to low 80s during the day but it could be anywhere between 60 and 95. Nights are usually in the upper 50s to 60s. Vancouver will probably be 5-10 degrees cooler both during the day and at night. And if you are near the water is usually about 5-10 degrees cooler than further inland. Sitka will probably be cooler - highs in the 60s and lows in the upper 40s If you are used to a warmer climate you will definitely want to bring sweaters or a jacket or be prepared to buy one. I remember many years ago overhearing a woman who I could tell from her accent was obviously from the south saying "My gawd, I can't believe it's summer- it's like the ARK-TIC here!"

Seattle could see 80's on the nice days, but 70's is common, while Southeast AK will be anywhere from 45-75, and most likely somewhere in the middle of that. You will need lighter clothes for the warmer days, and sweaters or sweatshirts for the cooler days and nights. Bring some rainwear, too, because you never know when it's going to rain in that part of the world....

you should take sandles 4-7 tank tops or t-shirts take some Caprese, shorts and maybe some skirts but if your worried about the weather maybe you should take a light sweat, something that is'nt so heavy

We are having a sucky summer in SE Alaska and Seattle is having a nice summer. So expect 70's and 80's in Seattle and 50's and low 60's (and rainy) in Sitka. Depending on your tolerance i would go for jeans and layer on the top. Tank top, t-shirt, fleece, and a light raincoat. You can always add or remove layers depending on the weather. Good luck and maybe the sun will come out when you are up here. Oh and don't underestimate the power of long underwear. You throw those on under some nice waterproof workout pants and you can hike or shop for hours and not get cold.
