  • I'm moving to Seattle,WA soon. How is life out there? Is it too cold? How are people, economy and all? I may be moving there in this coming January or Feb. I wanna know more about the places. I asked some people who lives there. They say it's too cold or boring. Is that true? I'm in Atlanta right now. Please tell me about Seattle. I like malls. Are there any good malls to open up a business also?

  • Answer:

If you have lived in the south all of your life, you are probably in for a pretty huge culture shock. I've lived in the Seattle area my entire life but have visited Atlanta a couple of times. Here are some of some of my observations about the differences: Compared to Atlanta, you will probably think Seattle is cold. It doesn't snow very often, but there is a rainy season with cool, cloudy weather that lasts about 9 months from October to July. The summers tend to be fairly dry and sunny but the average high temperature is in the upper 70s. There are usually one or two heat waves every summer that last a few days that have high temperatures in the 90s. Of course any description of the people is a generalization and not everyone is the same and Seattle is very diverse with many different ethnic groups. The typical Seattle person is well-educated, reads a lot, is interested in eating healthy foods and staying fit, enjoys the outdoors, supports protecting the environment, is not very religious, doesn't watch Fox News or listen to country music and is more liberal in their politics than the average person from Georgia. There are some malls, mostly in the suburban areas. A lot of the people who live in the Seattle area make an effort to support locally made products and businesses by buying things in places like the Pike Place Market: http://www.squidoo.com/Seattle-Pike-Place-Market Whether or not you will find it boring depends on what you like to do and whether you will fit in comfortably with the cultural differences. Seattle is not boring, it's a big lively cosmopolitan city, lots of outdoor recreation very close to the city. The people are pretty much like everywhere else, except for all the homeless street kids. It's a very left-wing city so you'll see protests and annoying stuff like that. The weather is pretty much the complete opposite of Atlanta. It gets pretty cold in winter, but summers are perfect.

i live outside Seattle but work in Seattle. It's not that people here are unfriendly, they will hold the door for you and wave you into traffic and stuff like that, it's that everything is maddeningly impersonal. The attitude is "have a nice day, somewhere else". It's easy to get along but making friends is almost impossible. People will say they want to hang out with you sometime and look at you like a freak when you actually suggest something. People enthusiastically say they are coming to a party then don't show up. People are flaky and hard to pin down. Girls lead you on for weeks and snub you with no explanation. People are insincere. Norms of social interaction don't apply here. Most people don't like or dislike you, they're totally indifferent. Every interaction will be maddeningly superficial.
