Why does the UW Tacoma use a husky as their mascot? Doesn't this just confuse them with UW (Seattle)?
-
UW Bothell and UW Tacoma are separate campuses of the University of Washington system. They are not the same as the (original) University of Washington, located in Seattle. The difference between the schools is similar to those of the California system, which has several different campuses (UCBerkeley, UCDavis, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, etc.) My point is, that earning a degree from different campuses deservedly carries a different level of prestige, since getting in to a competitive program at the UW Seattle is very different than just declaring a major at the UW Tacoma or Bothell, let alone the difficulty of admissions difference. With these differences, why doesn't the UW Tacoma embrace its own identity and pick its own mascot instead of biting off the UW Seattle and its huskies? UC Berkeley has the golden bears. UC Merced has the bobcat. Nobody gets the two schools confused! And nobody at UC Merced gets away with an affiliation with Berkeley! ;) *Also, I must point out that California has all the Cal State schools and North/South/Eastern/Western type of public universities that the state of Washington does, too.*

Answer:
And there's separate football and basketball and other teams for these different branches of the same university? I don't think so. Mascots really are more to identify teams not branches of the same university. And seriously - wow - when I went to college I was much more focused on my courses then whether or not there was someone else wearing a tshirt with the same mascot on it and another location!

UCLA and UC Berkeley and UC Riverside all have "bears" as their mascot. So suggesting that the Cal system did it "better" and that each has their own mascot isn't that accurate. That's not really how it all evolved. At this point UW Tacoma has a separate mascot - Hendrix the Husky. UW Bothell also has a separate mascot - Holly the Husky. Whether the schools have different mascots or not makes no difference. No-one asks you what the mascot of your alma mater is in determining whether you went to the "good" school or not.

We don't want to be like the California schools. Most people in the NW do not give a rat's butt about what you do in California.

People in Washington don't care - if it bothers you go to/stay in California.
