FM was so new that the stations hadn't yet reached the commercialism that is so preveleant in the current formats. That meant that groups that might not get airplay in the more popular AM stations got plenty of play on the FM bands. On AM, you didn't hear a band unless they were on the top 40 lists. And they couldn't get on the lists unless they got air time. Bands like Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Greatful Dead and many more wouldn't be remembered today if it weren't for the newly emerging FM stations. And, once those stations began getting attention, people noticed the incredible sound quality that the AM band was, simply not capable of. Not to mention real, genuine stereophonic radio! What a concept! By the way, in those days, FM disc jockeys were anything but hyperactive. The stereotypical FM air personality was laid back, soft spoken and eriudite. Unlike the manic AM jock.

They were better because they played a variety for every age group and they didn't have to pay the piper for every song they played.
