How far is it from Berkeley Amtrak to UC Berkeley?

What is the easiest way to get to UC Berkeley from Amtrak station?

  • What is the easiest/safest way to get from the amtrak station in berkeley to the campus? What bus lines take you directly?

  • Answer:

Berkeley's Amtrak station is at 700 University Ave (at 3rd Street). The AC Transit 51 bus runs from the station to within a block of UC Berkeley, and then travels close to the west and south sides of the campus. http://www.actransit.org/maps/linefinder.htm I think the 51 bus is the most-used bus line in AC Transit, so the buses run quite often. You have two choices: Get off at the stop closest to the building you're going to, and walk through the campus. It won't be far -- at worst a few blocks (unless you're going to Lawrence Berkeley Lab up in the hills). Alternatively, you can get off the 51 bus in downtown Berkeley and transfer to Bear Transit, which has a number of shuttle lines that will take you close to any point on campus. Many of its lines stop on Shattuck Avenue between Center and Addison -- see the Bear Transit maps for details. Bear Transit: http://pt.berkeley.edu/around/transit/shuttles Incidentally, BART is not useful for this trip, because the Berkeley Amtrak station is not near a BART station. (The Downtown Berkeley station is at Shattuck and Center, just west of the university.) --- edit The answer below recommends transferring from the 51 bus to another AC Transit bus. There are two problems with this: 1) The other bus lines run significantly less often than the 51 line. 2) They probably won't let you off as close to your destination as a Bear Transit bus. Bear Transit is specifically designed to serve the campus community, but AC Transit is not. If a transfer to another AC Transit bus works in your case, you should take advantage of it; but most of the time, I suspect that it will take longer than the other two options (walking from downtown, or transferring to Bear Transit). If you're going to be making this trip repeatedly, you can experiment with various methods. Just be sure that you leave plenty of time so you're not late for a class. Walking is the most predictable (but not necessarily the fastest) method to get from downtown to the campus. You should be aware that it's an uphill walk.

The ACTransit 51 bus line. It runs from the Amtrak right to downtown and then along the south side of the campus for about 6 blocks. At downtown Berkeley, right by the BART station you can transfer to just about any bus in Berkeley. The 65 runs along the north side of campus, though it only stops twice I think. The 7 runs the same route as the 51 around campus. And the 52L, towards Telegraph/UC Berkeley runs a loop at all 4 sides of campus before making a U-turn and heading back the same way. See the site below for maps that'll help clarify things.

From the Amtrak Station at the Pier in San Francisco? You should walk down the street to the Embarcadero BART station and take the Bart to Berkley and then from there you can get a bus right to the campus
