How could I transfer to Stanford?

Transfer to UCB or Stanford or stay in UCR?

  • OK im really confused right now on Fall i start school at UC Riverside Im a english major like i love the school how it looks and everything but i feel kind of weird here like i got in this school with a gpa of 3.82 i felt it was pretty high but i didn't even bother to apply at UCB or Stanford cus i felt that maybe not good enough for them i got accepted to all CSU that i applied and got accepted to UCSD and UCR i chose UCR but wow on orientation day i found out that everyone here mostly got in with a g.p.a of 3.0 Or 3.3 or 3.5 but haven't heard no one who got in with higher than me Im type of girl that always goes beyond expectations like mostly all my high school friends got stuck in community colleges not because they couldn afford UC but because their grades i feel like i could of gone higher UCR like all my dedication in high school to get in a good school i feel UCR is not where i should of gone and seeing that UCB rates number 1 in my major english and stanford being a really well knows school i dont know what to do transfer maybe on my junior year to one of those but which one or stay here any advice would be helpful thank you=]

  • Answer:

Do not judge a school by its "ranking". Yes, UCR isn't exactly the highest-rated school, but you never know how it's going to be. You might like the professors, or your department, a lot more than UCB. A lot of times it's better to be in a lower-rated school where you can excel and stand out from the crowd, rather than a higher-ranked school where you're just average.

You might want to see how you perform at there before you consider transferring. No offense, but based on how your question is written it's a bit hard to believe that you are an english major.

My advice is that it is a little too soon to be thinking about transferring. You haven't even been to a single class yet! Give it at least a year to see how impressed you are with the program. If at that time, you feel like UCR isn't good enough for you, then look into transferring. But I'm pretty sure you will find the classes sufficiently challenging and you will make some good friends. FYI, it is nearly impossible to transfer into Stanford, so your best bet would be another UC if it came to that. When I first started at UCD, a LOT of my fellow freshman were upset that it wasn't Berkeley. After the first quarter, the vast majority of them got over it and started enjoying themselves. I only knew one person who transferred, from Davis to Cornell, because UCD wasn't ultra-competitive enough for her (and she was pre-vet, so both schools are pretty much the best of the best for that).
