Where is the best place to stay in Los Angeles?

Where is a nice place to stay halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles?

  • In July we're going on holiday to San Francisco, and we're then driving down to Los Angeles. To save doing it all in one day, we're going to stop over the night somewhere on the way, does anybody know any nice places to stay? Also, is it worth going along Highway 1? we want to, but we've heard it's not worth the extra 2 hours. But we're in no rush to get to LA, so what do you think? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

The PCH is gorgeous! But I'd rather be driving it north than south!! Find something around Big Sur if you can. The Big Sur Inn is decent and not too expensive, though not on the ocean. Go to TripAdvisor.com for destination guides and a list of hotels with comments from past guests.

St. Louis Obispo for your night stop. The coastal route on highway 1 is beautiful. unless you're in a hurry avoid the interstate. Ian M

Highway 1 is DEFINITELY worth the extra 2 hours, especially since you are in no rush. Those of us who live here almost always take the fast way, but since you have never been, and it may be some time before you can come back, you really should take the scenic route. San Louis Obispo is right about half way between SF and LA, and is near Hearst Castle. But there are lots of other places you could stop: Big Sur, Pacific Grove/Monterey/Carmel, Santa Barbara, Solvang (very cute Danish style town). If you are a wine drinker, most of these stops are near wineries, aside from Big Sur which is more of a wilderness area. If you are interested in something unique and off-beat, check out the Madonna Inn in San Louis Obispo. It has dozens of rooms, each with its own theme like a cave room and a Victorian room.

Actually the extra 2 hours on Highway 1 is gorgeous. Big Sur would be a nice place to stop. However, if you want a slightly faster route, go down Highway 101 and stay in San Luis Obispo. that is approximately 4 hours south of SF and about the same north of LA. Or if you want, try Santa Barbara. It just depends on how far you want to drive in a day.
