What are some summer job opportunities in San Francisco?

Finding a job in San Francisco?

  • I am originally from the Bay Area and would like to go back next month to look for work. I've heard that it is very tough to find a job right now so I'd like to know how the job market is at this time. I work in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech industry. I know that there are a lot of companies in San Francisco. I've heard that the job market has picked up a little bit in the Bay Area. However, I am not sure about how the job market is out there and if there are very many job opportunities right now. So how is the job market in the San Francisco Bay Area right now? Would it be difficult to find work if I decide to move back?

  • Answer:

You should check CalJobs website (EDD llstings) and some employment agencies in S.F.I would start sending the agencies your resume right away. A lot of tech starts ups are coming back to S.F. instead of San Jose.

Instructions Things You'll Need: Already made plans for where you will stay and if possible prearranged interviews to get you started Good walking shoes An updated resume A cell phone A list of perspective employers you have or will contact An idea of where you will live Plans for your vehicle if you are driving and keeping it Step 1 I lived and worked 14 years in San Francisco and hope my knowledge of the area helps you to land a job in one of coolest cities in the world. Step 2 If you are moving to San Francisco and need to live frugally until you get your feet on the ground, then where you live - what you pay for rent is going to be the most important financial aspect of your new life. Step 3 Of course there's no place like Carigslist.org to find a place to live - and possibly a job as well. So make use of this free phenomenon to find both. You are likely going to need to find a person or persons looking for a roommate. Make sure you choose a living environment that will not interfere with your job search and your rest once you find a job. Step 4 The Tenderloin at Sunrise Alternately, you can also choose to find a place in San Francisco's Tenderloin district where some studios can be rented at lower prices, and where there are many residential hotels. The neighborhood is a potpourri of culture and has a somewhat seedy side, especially at night. The great thing about the Tenderloin is its location - central to the whole city, encompassing the Civic Center, main public library, City Hall, the Federal Building and more. Public transportation abounds, and in fact if you bring a vehicle with you to the city, be prepared for this to be a major expense for parking, or at least time consuming if you have to park on the street and move your car when streets are being cleaned and during commute times. Step 5 If you are looking for a professional job, such as lawyer, architect, doctor or similar then it's best if you prearrange interviews for your arrival in the city. There are two major newspapers - The San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner. Scour the ads and apply for jobs prior to moving. Even if you are an office worker looking for a desk job in San Francisco's Financial District, it's a very good idea to start looking ahead and make arrangements to meet with as many perspective employers as possible. If you wait to begin your search after arrival there will be a lag time during which you have to wait for interviews, and this eats up money so prearranging whenever possible is a good idea. Step 6 For office workers two major employers are Bank of America and Wells Fargo. Chevron Oil is also headquartered in San Francisco, in the Financial District. There are in fact many major companies based in the area so if you have a polished resume, a good attitude and are persistent then you will have a great chance of landing a job with a major employer, even in slim times. Step 7 San Francisco is also known for its big heart and is home to a large number of non-profit agencies. If you want a job as well as the opportunity to help others, working for a non-profit can be the perfect fit. Simply Google "Non-profit agencies in San Francisco." Step 8 On the blue and green collar side, San Francisco never seems to stop expanding, and landing a construction job building a new hotel or high-rise is a nice possibility. Many of these types of jobs are union so connecting with a labor union in your trade is a foot in the door to a good construction job in the city. Step 9 If you really need a job as soon as possible and have restaurant experience you stand a very good chance of getting hired right away in this city world famous for it's thousands of restaurants catering to all tastes and cultures. Step 10 San Francisco's tremendous tourism industry makes it possible to also find jobs in hotels, on Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, and if you know the city streets and have a knack for driving on steep hills, as a taxi driver. Step 11 Having a bad hair day in San Francisco will probably be overlooked by this city of tolerance If you are young and moving to the city, the first job you get probably will not be the one you choose to keep for many years. But given the tremendous popularity of the city and all the businesses needed to keep it running, you should be able with some persistence find a job to keep you on your feet, giving you time to make your next career move or go to school.

You can look on craigslist.com. The Cal job site is also good, but you have to sign up for it to use it. You can post a resume for free and hope a employer calls you. California has a 12% unemployment rate
