Is San Francisco a good place to start an acting career?

  • I love San Francisco and I adore theatre. Is San Francisco a good city to begin a career in acting and film for a young adult in their early twenties with acting experience?

    There are obviously acting opportunities in San Francisco, and many people make a good living as actors in SF... but is it the best option if you want to make acting (especially film) your life? Probably not. It's reasonably isolated in that sense - a self-contained acting community. If you want to become a big actor in San Francisco, you can become just that... IN San Francisco. If you're looking for national or international recognition (ie: if you want to be famous), go to LA if you want to be a film actor, New York if you want to be a stage actor. Pretty obvious, really.

There are a number of places to get good training in acting, voice, dance, so yes, it's a good place to start. It's not a good place to stay if you want to make it your career.
