Finding a job in San Francisco?
-
I am originally from the Bay Area and would like to go back next month to look for work. I've heard that it is very tough to find a job right now so I'd like to know how the job market is at this time. I work in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech industry. I know that there are a lot of companies in San Francisco. I've heard that the job market has picked up a little bit in the Bay Area. However, I am not sure about how the job market is out there and if there are very many job opportunities right now. So how is the job market in the San Francisco Bay Area right now? Would it be difficult to find work if I decide to move back?

Answer:
If you're under 30 I wouldn't risk it. No one's really hiring anyone under 30 right now, ESPECIALLY in the Bay Area (likewise, the unemployment rate for 18-29 is more than double that of the overall). If you're over 30, it's a bit better but still not great. The job market hasn't really picked up, unless you're eligible for a program like Jobs Now or something. But for the most part, no, it's still crap. Anything saying otherwise is just PR spin over-emphasising said programs. That said... everyone has a difference experience. Some people have been out of work for years, despite sending out a dozen resumes a day, and others have a stroke of luck and find a job within a month. I'd say put your feelers out first... send out resumes and see what responses you get (if any). If you get a few responses/interviews (even if you can't make them... just to see what the response is) then I'd take that as a good sign and go for it. Otherwise, give it another year or 2.

Hey, I don't like to say anything against San Francisco, my fave city, but jobs are not moving at present. Jobs are in a slump all over the US as you know, and SF is no different. HOWEVER, the biotech/pharm in San Diego is doing very well!! - do your research; go the resume route. You have a good profession, even in today's economy it continues to grow ever so slightly. Big decision, scary too; best luck to you.
You know, the best way to go would be if you submitted resumes to the companies you are interested in--or at least that are up your skill market. Call everyone you know in your field to let them know you are looking for a job in the SF Bay area (most job openings are found through word of mouth these days and they get filled instantly). Then if a company is interested in your talents, they'll fly you out (might even put you for overnight) for an interview. And then if you get the job, you can take your moving expenses off your tax returns as job-related expenses. Most good jobs are snapped up fast unless it requires some extremely esoteric knowledge or experience and since I'm not in the biotech/pharm industry, I wouldn't know what that entails. There are good biotech companies out here and they can't all be fully filled all the time (people are always moving around).
