Do I need International Driving Permit in France?

Do Indians traveling to San Francisco not need a US based Driver's License or an International Driving Permit?

  • I have heard that California state DMV laws recognizes the Indian license and does not require one to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a local driving license. Can someone please confirm this, and/or guide me on the best way to confirm this.

  • Answer:

An IDP is NOT a real driver license. It is simply a document that translates the information on your current, valid home country driver license into the 10 most commonly spoken world languages. If your driver license is printed in the English language you do NOT need an IDP.

An Indian driving license is valid in the USA. An IDP is not required as long as the license is in English. Note that some car rental agencies require international visitors to have an IDP even if their national license is in English. http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Foreign_Visitors_Driving.shtml http://www.uk-2-usa.com/absolutebeginners/roads.html https://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/idp-requirements-by-country.html#notes http://www.drivers.com/article/207

Yes, California recognizes the Indian license for up to 6 months. However, an IDP is still recommended if you want to rent a car or obtain insurance.
