What is like at San Francisco State?
-
I got accepted at CSU Northridge and San Francisco State. And I hear that San Francisco State is better. What is like? Is the school close to any malls or movie theaters? Is it away from the downtown and tourist area? When I visited San Francisco I wasn't used to it. I liked southern california which I have been raised in. Thanks for any help.

Answer:
San Diego, Long Beach, San Jose, and San Francisco are generally regarded as the better CSU campuses. Although the ratings do fluctuate from year to year. SFSU is actually closer to Daly City than Downtown San Francisco, So, the campus has a more suburban feel to it. It is right next to the Stonestown Mall. Nordstrom, Macys, and Borders are the anchors. Many students walk to the mall for lunch because it has a better selection of food than the campus cafeteria and coffee shops. There's also a tiny movie theater (UA Stonestown). It usually shows independent films. You're also very close to Lake Merced and the San Francisco Zoo. For SFSU students, these are nice places to exercise. Or just to get away from the hustle. Getting to Downtown San Francisco and the East Bay is pretty easy. There's a MUNI (Light Rail) station on 19th Avenue. And BART (Metro Rail) operates a free shuttle bus to the Daly City station from SFSU. MUNI trains operate until 1 AM daily. There's a night bus - OWL #91 - if you miss the last run. BART courtesy shuttles run every 15 minutes weekdays 7 AM to 10:30 PM. At all other times, you can take regular bus #28. Though you'll have to pay a fare.

SF State is directly across the street from Stonestown Mall and there's plenty of transportation around. Neither are excellent schools considering they're pretty easy to get into, but both will take getting used to. It's not close to downtown or any tourist areas.

SF State is right next to Stonestown Mall! My brother goes there, and he really likes it. And pish posh about you not being used to the City, you will get used to it in a month!

It is a commuter school, so there is not as huge a number of people in dorms as in other schools. The location is in the high end residential area near a lake. Stonestown shopping center is up the block. There is also a movie theatre there. About a 5-minute drive south is the Serramonte shopping center. A little closer than Serramonte is a multiplex theatre in Daly City. About a 10-minute drive south is the Tanforan Park shopping center. Public transit is fairly convenient from SFSU to the rest of the city. SFSU is a smaller school compared to some of the other nearby bigger universities. However, if you like the small school feel as opposed to being one amongst the masses, then SFSU would fit you. You will be able to talk directly to professors as opposed to having to deal with TA's in the bigger schools. It is not uncommon to be on a first name basis with many of the professors.

The weather is nice and you do have stonestown mall, although there really is no convenient place to eat. As far as downtown goes, you just get on the "M" line at the SF State station and you can get downtown in nothing flat
