How do leaves change colors?

When do the leaves change colors in the Bay Area?

  • I live in jersey and the leaves are usually completely off the trees late november/early december. ive also been to LA, where the leaves are still beautifully green in november and nowhere near falling off. How bout for the bay area, specifically the south bay region like santa clara?

  • Answer:

Even in San Jose the leaves do turn orange and red the same time of year as everywhere else. But they linger because it does not get very cold. Los Angeles is 400 miles further south.

The Bay Area doesn't get the riot of color that colder climes have. The leaves simply dry up, turn brown [with little variation] and fall off. By the end of November most of the trees are denuded.

Do you think you are in Northern Pennsylvania? In Santa Clara, there are no trees.
